We help you effectively manage food production hazards and implement preventative measures to ensure food safety and quality standards are met. Why is this important, now more than ever before?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States reports that each year, approximately 48 million persons get sick, and 3,000 die from foodborne diseases. The agency is taking steps to combat that trend. One step included signing the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) into law in 2011. Another step that is of immediate concern to exporters to the United States, is that effective January, 1, 2026, all food items to be imported to the United states must be FSMA compliant.
Compliance generally involves the ability to provide traceability records that show how potential hazards are handled from the farm to the fork. Exporters to the US will become bound to provide detailed records within 24 hours of a FDA request. Details include whether the food item came in contact with allergens, and details of preventative measures enacted, per batch of product, for potential hazards. Collation of such a massive base of information within the stipulated time may seem like a mammoth task for an exporter. Some solutions have started to emerge. Many are not able to track the details required, and most have a relatively high price point (of the order of USD10K annually).
